Job Overview:

Part-Time Reporter for the Pioneer Press, primarily weekends.

Position Summary: The reporting duties for this position will primarily be covering breaking news, particularly crime news and local government news and community events. The editing duties will primarily be filling in as a metro desk editor, so previous training and experience as an editor and/or willingness to learn are important.

Major Functions: Cover breaking news. Be prepared to hit the ground running, at the start of your shift, and keep running until deadline. Source development. You must develop relationships -- usually by phone -- with the police and other public safety officials across our circulation area. You'll be checking in with them each shift. You also need to develop knowledge of the best people to call and how to reach them for a variety of breaking news stories. Collaboration. You must be ready to pick up stories started by other reporters and bring them to completion. So, teamwork and communication with that reporter and with your editor are paramount. Education: College degree is preferred.

Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of two years reporting experience, exhibiting success at general assignment and breaking news reporting.

Your schedule will average less than 20 hours per week. Unusual exceptions will be made for big, breaking news. But generally, your regular schedule will average less than 20 hours.
