Job Overview:
ESSENTIAL PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION:
This financial reporting manager position will be responsible for the financial reporting process, including preparation of GAAP consolidated financial statements and quarterly reports to the board and other stakeholders for both MediaNews Group and Tribune Publishing, which are private companies and not SEC filers. This includes financial statement analysis, preparation of schedules to support footnotes and technical accounting research. Also, this position will help develop and maintain accounting policies and lead projects, such as implementation of changes in accounting standards. In addition, this position would be involved with the external audit. A strong understanding of GAAP is required and excellent communication skills are necessary to work with executive team, shared service center and media property controllers.
Also assists in various corporate accounting projects.
PRINCIPAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Monthly reporting to board and other stakeholders.
Quarterly reporting to board and other stakeholders, including debt covenant calculations.
Annual reporting for audited financial statements, including debt covenant calculations.
Involvement in quarterly and annual control processes, including calls and review of representations made by field locations.
Technical accounting research and documentation
Update and, as necessary, create GAAP accounting policies.
Review balance sheet reconciliations and consolidation schedules.
Analysis of location financial statements (income statement and balance sheet), identifying potential accounting errors, and following up with the property as needed to ensure all issues are addressed
Peer review analysis
Ad-Hoc projects
Financial responsibilities:
Ensures the financial statements and related documents for MediaNews Group and Tribune are complete and accurate.
DECISION-MAKING RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works under minimal supervision and has the ability to lead projects and prioritize work-load throughout the month. Critical and analytical decision-making skills used frequently. Expected to take initiative to refine procedures and notify management of potential issues. Will also determine whether the property financial statements are materially complete and accurate along with assessing if the property has satisfactorily answered corporate review questions on the property financial statements. Works with complex accounting transactions to accurately report consolidated financial reporting.
The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following:

While performing the duties of this job, the associate is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light weights of up to 10 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application information. The associate frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
Occasional moderate job stress due to deadlines, downtime and number of escalated issues from off-site locations.
This is a remote position, but periodically might be required to attend work on-site during normal business hours
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
The minimum education required to be considered for this position is:
A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting plus 3-5 years experience
CPA certification
Preferred experience/knowledge:
GAAP financial statement preparation, including disclosures or attestation experience with a public accounting firm
Technical accounting research
Assistance with annual external financial statement audit, either on the auditor or client side.
Financial statement review
Multi-location environments and intercompany accounting
Strong analytical, judgment and decision-making skills with the ability to adapt to change.
Strong Excel skills required
Experience in planning and forecasting software (Oracle EPM or similar system)
Ability to research and resolve issues and to present financial information in a logical manner
Experience with cash flow reporting
Strong communications skills to work with executive team and media locations.
The annual salary range is $95,000 - $105,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. This role is eligible for a bonus based on performance.
