Job Overview:

Summary/Objective

Analytic role within the Finance Department for MediaNews Group, Inc. working with cross functional teams to improve business performance. This role will provide financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, accounting, process improvement, and support to department managers.

Essential Functions

  • Support Advertising and Finance leadership through the budgeting process by managing planning templates, trend analysis, and budgeting assumptions. Continue monitoring budgets and assist with expense accruals throughout the year.
  • Improve financial status by analyzing results, monitoring variances, identifying trends and recommending actions to management.
  • Develops recommendations to enhance company reporting and data quality.
  • Employs sophisticated financial and analytical concepts to define and measure business drivers and key metrics.
  • Works closely with Finance management to enhance company financial performance through a variety of financial analysis and projects.
  • Assist with month end close - preparation of journal entries and variance analysis.
  • Increases productivity by developing automated reporting/forecasting tools.
  • Collect and analyze data from multiple sources and present findings in a concise format.

Competencies & Skills

  • Strong analytical (quantitative as well as qualitative) skills including building models.
  • Self-starter with the ability to define business objectives and streamline functions.
  • Strong financial analysis foundation creating forecasts and models.
  • Have understanding of financial/accounting processes, terminology, systems and controls.
  • Strong attention to detail including a high level of accuracy a must.
  • Able to demonstrate advanced Excel skills including vlookups & advanced formulas.
  • Experience using JD Edwards/Hyperion/Essbase/BPC(SAP)/ or other excel based financial software a plus.
  • Good business judgment. Ability to analyze, uncover & synthesize insights from large data sets
  • Has a natural curiosity and investigative mindset.
  • Able to prioritize workload with minimal supervision and manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to summarize and clearly communicate findings to sales directors and executive management.
  • Strong interpersonal and interrelation skills with an ability to establish build and maintain relationships with a variety of people across divisions.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and spoken.

Required or Preferred Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting/Finance/Economics/Mathematics/Statistics preferred but not required

Required or Preferred Experience

  • Four (4) years in related financial analyst/business analyst role or equivalent education

Work Environment

  • This job operates in a professional office environment or a remote location. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms and requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies up to 10 pounds.
