Summary/Objective
The Managing Editor works with the Publisher to develop a strategy that ensures The Trail Gazette is meeting the needs of its audience, as demonstrated by subscriptions and digital/other forms of audience engagement.
Essential Functions
Assists Publisher in developing and implementing newsroom wide goals
Responsible for facilitating selected daily/weekly news meetings, ensuring staff is assigned to all major daily stories and ensuring there is at least one exclusive enterprise story every week and selecting stories for 1A.
Makes decisions on anonymous sources, questionable language, spending and other similar issues that require senior approval of Publisher.
Shares with Publisher as the voice of The Trail Gazette to the community at large.
Has general knowledge of the newsroom budget; assists Publisher in resource allocation decisions.
Has general knowledge of corporate goals and initiatives; assists Publisher in implementation strategies.
Speaks regularly with reporters and has a deep understanding of what stories each is pursuing and that all elements, including photography and digital plans, are considered.
Monitors analytics to ensure story choices are resonating with readers
Writes and edits stories for context, organization, clarity, length and style.
Coaches reporters to write deep enterprise and watchdog stories, while also breaking key news on their beats.
Work with design team on page layout for each special section and the two news publications weekly. Regularly provides stories that compete for 1A in the print product and can lead the home page.
Ensures that all articles are posted online and consistently works with team on social media posts and engagements.
Competencies & Skills
Must possess strong news judgment.
Reporting, writing and editing skills, including knowledge of AP style.
Strong digital headline writing skills.
Understanding of SEO and how to leverage it to build audience for our content.
Understanding of social media and how groups of interest congregate and share information online.
Most possess knowledge of and ability to assign digital storytelling methods.
Supervisory Responsibility
May supervise up to 3 full time employees
Travel
Up to 5% travel; in state, possible overnights
Education
Bachelor’s degree required
Experience
Minimum of 5 years reporting experience at daily news publication
Newsroom leadership experience, including managing reporters and editors to do their best work.
Solid understanding of digital platforms including social, Facebook, twitter etc.
Required Applications / Platform Knowledge / Softwares etc
Working knowledge of Google applications preferred
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

The annual salary range is $30,000 - $40,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, and a 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
