Job Overview:

We’d love you to join our growing product development team whose mission is to create people-centric software experiences that empower our local news and digital partners. True to our purpose, we help small teams play big!

Be part of a digital media landscape in the midst of rapid change; our team is at the center of a new content, marketing, operations, and revenue-sustainable experience that puts product, people and performance first. Your leadership of both the data team and data product line span a significant portion of the local news digital media US ecosystem, including the Denver Post, San Jose Mercury News, the Boulder Daily Camera and the St. Paul Pioneer Press, as well as our Adtaxi digital marketing agency and affiliate company Tribune Publishing. Check out our local news portfolio to see if we operate in a market near you.

As part of the broader Product Development team, you will contribute to a culture that prioritizes continuous learning, autonomous decision making, agility, and pragmatism. Join us to kick-start your career at a company that offers substantial personal and professional growth opportunities via a hands-on learning approach and a flexible working style.

About This Role

You will lead the data analytics agile team and product line, focused on creating internal data products that drive decision making across the company. Your insights, reports, dashboards, product experiment frameworks, and data platforms inform tactics and strategy across digital subscriptions, digital advertising, audience, and product leadership. As a product director, you will define the vision, strategy, initiatives, and roadmap for data products and platforms, while also communicating insights and roadmap to internal stakeholder and executive customers.

The ideal candidate will be organized, methodical, and analytical, familiar with product management principles as applied to data products, with effective communication styles that resonate with all types of internal stakeholders. With little guidance, the candidate will be responsible for building the roadmap and executing a large cross-company data product standardization project, while delivering data insights to help other company leaders drive strategy. Comfort with uncertainty, the ability to pull order out of chaos, and bring others along with you based on a solid vision are additional ingredients for success.

Essential Functions

  • Ability to effectively lead and manage a highly visible team within the organization

  • Serve as Community of Practice leader to facilitate decentralization and standardization of data tools, metrics, practices, and techniques across news properties and revenue departments alike

  • Own, define, and communicate the vision, strategy, roadmap and tactics for the data analytics product line

  • Maintain open communication lines with other teams to ensure data needs are being met

  • Build out new reporting as needed and maintain existing reports and dashboards for key stakeholders

  • Perform analysis focused on audience and revenue data across all owned and operated news sites. Identify and report on trends and opportunities

  • Work with executives and other stakeholders at news properties within our footprint to digest, understand, and report on consumer behavior

  • Own and manage key partnerships such as Google Analytics, Google Cloud, Tableau, Metrics for News, and more

  • Responsible for following industry and analytics trends and best practices, and reflecting these on the roadmap

Competencies & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Analytics, Data Science, Information Systems or related field. Equivalent work experience may substitute for degree requirements.

  • Product management experience preferred, but not required. Coaching will be provided

  • Strong analytical thought process and ability to interpret and communicate findings effectively across audiences

  • Proven ability to solve complex problems efficiently and creatively, with on-time delivery.

  • Experience using Tableau/Tableau Online and Data Studio

  • Experience implementing Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager

  • Understanding of data modeling, relational database concepts, and a working knowledge of SQL. Experience with Google’s BigQuery and nested data structures a plus.

  • Strong planning and organizational skills involving managing multiple work tasks in a fast-past environment, and the ability to work independently as well as collaborate in a team and across functional groups.

The annual salary is $140,000-$160,000 including bonus. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. This role is eligible for a bonus based on performance. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, and a 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility)
