Southern California News Group, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is seeking an Deputy News Editor to join the team! MediaNews Group offers news reporting and third party advertising and marketing opportunities through its multi-platform products which include: web, mobile, tablet, and print. MNG publishes award-winning content (49 Pulitzers) that amasses and engages a nationwide audience via 800 multi-media platforms including web, mobile, social, and print. Responsibilities:
Lead a fast-paced, detail-orientated copy desk for 11 daily publications in the Southern California market.
Reviewing day-to-day copy desk operations and work to ensure that daily workflow and best practices by copy editors are being implemented to ensure cohesiveness during the daily process
Design newspaper pages including editorial pages and special projects.
Strong grasp of AP style, grammar, leadership and the drive to become engaged in and with the community in order to present compelling content across print and digital platforms.
Motivate reporters with a strong news judgment that will help increase readership. Strong interpersonal skills are a must.
Plan all editions by coordinating coverage of stories and events in the area.
Lead direction on a number of special projects and contribute to the editorial and overall success of the publication through photos and stories in the community.
Work with the design hub on page design.
Provide direction and manage editorial staff and a freelance pool when appropriate.
Edit stories and content and plan out editions and weekly news budgets with staff.
Responsible for the development of all online content, photos galleries, video etc.
The editor is expected to cover stories when necessary.
Oversee all administration and circulation functions at the newspaper.
Qualifications:
Degree in journalism, communication or equivalent experience.
3-5 years of editorial experience.
Previous supervisory experience required.
Expert knowledge of AP style and grammar.
Experience with digital content and all social media platforms.
Page design experience is a plus.
Ability to develop skills of reporting staff.
A goal-setter with the vision to achieve them.
Flexible schedule is offered to ensure ability to produce each edition.
Some weekend work may be required.
