Job Overview:

Southern California News Group, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is seeking a Deputy Design Editor to join the team! MediaNews Group offers news reporting and third party advertising and marketing opportunities through its multi-platform products which include: web, mobile, tablet, and print. We are one of the largest media groups in the U.S., serving high-value audiences and connecting advertisers to them. MNG publishes award-winning content (49 Pulitzers) that amasses and engages a nationwide audience via 800 multi-media platforms including web, mobile, social, and print. Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate, design and edit for a group of weeklies and be involved in organizational duties attached to the features pages for 11 dailies.

  • Reviewing day-to-day copy desk operations in the weeklies and work closely with the Features Manger to ensure that daily workflow and best practices by copy editors and designers are being implemented to ensure cohesiveness during the daily/weekly process.

  • Managing the features design department in the absence of the Features Manager, including working with and coordinating designers, slotting three weekend editions, making sure space requirements are met for all features editions and also slotting advanced puzzle, advice and comics pages in coordination with paginators.

  • Back-up as Weeklies Coordinator and Deputy News Editor when the need arises

  • Ability to work on two daily print publications and websites.

  • Editing content.

  • Paginate the daily sections.

  • Create photo galleries and other content.

  • Keep websites updated and share content across a variety of social media platforms.

Competencies & Skills

  • The combination of topnotch editing and designing skills is a must.

  • Strong news judgment is a must.

  • Successful candidates must have a solid editing background.

  • Ability to communicate with reporters and editors.

  • Ability to work under tight deadline constraints.

  • Comfortable working with InDesign and Adobe Photoshop.

  • Multitasking and organizational skills are key.

  • Familiarity with content management systems (CMS).

Required or Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred
