Summary/Objective
The Demographics and Equity Editor coordinates with other team members and edits their stories in conjunction with a senior editor, while occasionally writing stories themselves. They are focused on identifying the stories news organizations may overlook and the development of ideas on how best to approach these stories.
Essential Functions
- Lead and collaborate with a team to examine criminal justice beyond the daily mayhem and into healthcare, poverty and education in underserved communities, religious freedom and discrimination.
- Identify strong candidates to build the demographics and equity team consisting of both dedicated and occasional members.
- Coordinate the members of the team to provide the organization and communication needed to ensure success
- Edit stories produced by other team members
- Report and write stories that help readers better understand the communities we cover
- Work with the photo and graphics teams to ensure exploration of all the visual ways stories can be told or enhanced
- Provide leadership and direction to members of the team
- Discuss stories from the beginning of the process with the Audience Engagement Editor and Digital Producers to provide the best possible opportunity for these stories to reach readers
Competencies & Skills
- Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and accurately fact-check information
- Ability to edit and write copy in a clear fashion, free of errors and using AP style
- Experience with social media for the purposes of reader engagement
- Excellent communication and networking skills
- Ability to work in a high stress deadline driven environment
- Comfortable in use of general computer systems and programs
Travel
- 50% - Must have reliable transportation and ability to reach both local and remote stories
Required Education
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required
Required Experience
- At least three years of professional journalism experience
Preferred Experience
- Fluency, or at minimum conversational ability, in a language other than English to assist in reaching deeper into the communities covered e.g. Spanish, Vietnamese, and Mandarin amongst others
- Some supervisory experience
- Five (5) years of professional journalism experience including covering issues of demographics and equity
Work Environment
- Hybrid work environment of remote and working in the field.
- Available business office currently located in Anaheim CA. subject to change.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; document; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms and requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies up to 20 pounds.
