Job Overview:

Southern California News Group, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is seeking a high-energy news junkie to handle wire selection, coordination and editing for 13 dailies in California. MediaNews Group offers news reporting and third party advertising and marketing opportunities through its multi-platform products which include: web, mobile, tablet, and print. We are one of the largest media groups in the U.S., serving high-value audiences and connecting advertisers to them. MNG publishes award-winning content (49 Pulitzers) that amasses and engages a nationwide audience via 800 multi-media platforms including web, mobile, social, and print. We are transforming the news industry.

The right candidate can balance the need for real-time reporting of breaking national and international news on digital platforms with development of a wire report for tomorrow’s print editions.

Responsibilities:

  • Recommending, selecting, editing and publishing content provided by third-party wire services, including the Associated Press, New York Times News Service, Bloomberg, other wire services and sister publications via Tribune News Service.

  • The position requires first-class news judgment and an implicit grasp of the need for mainstream media to provide a straightforward news report that is fair and balanced and serves a diverse audience.

  • Our wire editor will monitor all wire services and develop a list of top stories recommended for publication, working with digital editors and producers to post regional and national stories that will engage readers and with local editors to plan for print, including recommendations for stories that should go on the front pages of print editions and content planning for inside wire pages, including an early deadline Nation+World page that is produced for sister MediaNews Group publications.

  • The wire editor must have impeccable and balanced news judgment, be proficient in editing, headline writing, proofreading, and knowledgeable in AP style. The wire editor must also have a thorough understanding of layout and design requirements. Interpersonal skills are also critical as the wire editor will be coordinating with stakeholders across departments and properties, including senior editors, news editors, designers, copy editors and graphics designers on a daily basis.

Competencies & Skills:

  • All managers will be knowledgeable of late-breaking news protocols. This supervisor also will be involved in evaluating the performances of all design center employees under his/her purview.
